According the recently released AVMA U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook, here are the top 10 states with the most cat-owning households:

Vermont 49.5%

Maine 46.4%

Oregon 40.2

South Dakota 39.1%

Washington 39%

West Virginia 38.1%

Kentucky 36.8%

Idaho 34.6%

Indiana 34.4%

New Hampshire 34.2%

The bottom 10 states with cat-owning households according to the 2011 survey:

California 28.3%

South Carolina 27.8%

Rhode Island 27.6%

Alabama 27.4%

Florida 27.3%

Georgia 27.3%

Illinois 26.3%

New Jersey 25.3%

Veterinary Visits in 2011

The survey also included how many cat owners made trips for veterinary visits for their cats. Sadly, in 2011 only 55.1% of cat owners took their cats for at least one veterinary visit. This is a decrease of 13.5% from the last AVMA survey conducted in 2006.

The AVMA does this survey every five years. The survey was conducted in 2012 but reflects numbers from 2011.
