California Senate Bill 1229 (SB1229) was unanimously passed in the California State Senate. The bill would forbid landlords from refusing to rent to tenants with pets who are not declawed or devocalized.
The bill would also make it illegal for landlords to advertise any policies that require potential tenants to have their pets declawed or devocalized. If passed, landlords in violation would face a penalty of up to $1000 per animal.
The bill was authored by Senator Fran Pavely and still needs to be voted on by the State Assembly.
In 2010, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill that had passed the State Assembly and Senate.
